Google Messages lets you swipe (un)read messages

If you want to indicate in Google Messages that you have already read a message, or not, you can do so from soon with a simple swipe. That way you can better manage your messages.

Google Messages

Google Messages first only had swipe options to archive messages or delete them completely, but a swipe option will soon be added. Handy if you have a lot of spam in your messages, but what if you want to alert yourself to a message at a later time, because you are running from one meeting to another and want to read and respond with your full attention? Then you can now swipe.

According to Android Police, the beta of the app (version 20230515_01_RC00) includes a “Mark as read or unread” option. At least, the option is not new, because it has been possible for some time. All you had to do was long press the conversation from the list of conversations and a menu opened with that option. That can now be done faster, with a swipe. You can set yourself exactly how that swiping works and what the purpose of which swipe should be.

Swipe

In Messages Settings, which you’ll find when you tap your profile in the top right corner of Messages, you’ll find Swipe Actions. You can tap on that and then you have two choices: swipe right and swipe left. You can choose ‘archive’, ‘delete’ and ‘off’ for both.

Soon there will be an option in the form of marking as read or unread. Although it is not clear when this will come to the app. Just because it’s in beta doesn’t mean it’s coming to phones very soon and definitely. Sometimes there can be a lot of time in between or it doesn’t even happen at all.

We hope so, because more convenient swipe options – especially if you can set them yourself – are never an unnecessary luxury.

Do you use Google Messages a lot and are you still missing something? Leave it now in the comments.
