Apple AirTags now protected against stalkers thanks to update

After some bad publicity about the Apple AirTags, the Californian technology giant has finally taken proper measures to prevent misuse.

AirTags also useful for tracking people

Apple AirTags are small, handy and you can always follow them. Ideal for finding your keys, for example. Or other things that you often lose and that you really don’t want to miss. What’s not to love?

But do you know who also makes it very happy? Stalkers and other scary individuals. Because hide an AirTag in her backpack and you can find out exactly where that hot sexy babe who is casually drinking a drink at the bar lives. Fortunately, Apple has now put a stop to that.

Previous attempt to protect AirTags from stalking failed

Apple has already tried to protect the AirTags against abuse, because the company is of course not happy about the bad publicity that this resulted in. Investigators then succeeded in circumventing this security.

Apple has now rolled out Firmware Update 2.0.24, which notifies iPhone owners if an unknown AirTag is traveling with them. In principle, you can be sure that no criminal is following you with an AirTag. At least, in some special cases.

Update only protects Apple owners

Obviously this has to be the very latest iPhone, people with an older iPhone or, completely terrible of course. An Android phone has had bad luck. In the United States, almost everyone has an iPhone, so this problem is less of an issue there.

But here in Europe and the rest of the world, where Android is much more popular, this doesn’t really help. But do you have one of the most modern iPhones? Then the AirTags in your area will be automatically updated with the latest version.

As with any technology, a powerful technology can also be abused. Fortunately, this is being thought about more and more, so that we are also better protected.
