WhatsApp confirms a possible iPad app

There is an iPhone version of the WhatsApp app, but not an iPad version. That could change in the future based on a statement from messaging boss Will Cathcart during an interview with The Verge.

A WhatsApp application seems to be in the works

“People have wanted an iPad app for a long time”, recognizes the boss of WhatsApp. “We would love to do it”, he added. He does not say if such an application will see the light of day, but he does not close the door on the subject, which is good news for users with an Apple tablet.

“We’ve done a lot of work on multi-device support technology”, said Will Cathcart. The maintainer is referring here to rolling out multi-device support for WhatsApp. “Our web and desktop applications now have it. If I have cross-device support enabled, I can turn off my phone or lose my network connection and still receive messages on my computer. It would be really important for a tablet app, to be able to use the app even if your phone isn’t on. So the underlying technology is there”, he points out.

WhatsApp is part of Meta, which also controls Instagram and is also not entitled to a specific application for the iPad. It seems pretty good for messaging, it’s less so for the social network.
