Is there a tour or an album?
System of a Down is one of the most influential metal bands of the 2000s. In the meantime, however, it has become quiet around singer Serj Tankian & Co. What about a new tour or even new songs in 2023?
The last albums “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” were released in 2005 and are now almost 20 years old. There hasn’t been much new song material from SoaD since then and it doesn’t look like anything will change in that regard.
What happened to System of a Down?
“System of a Down” have not officially dissolved yet. So the band still exists, at least on paper. Every now and then you can still find each other for individual live performances. There you can hear the hits of the first four albums. Currently, however, only a concert in Las Vegas on May 13 on the alternative metal band’s live schedule. If and when the band again comes to Germany is not known.
They can’t be seen at the big festivals like “Rock am Ring” this year. Last was a live concert in Berlin 2020 planned. Due to the pandemic, however, the event was canceled and no catch-up date was announced. Most recently, at the end of 2022, it was said that an extensive tour for Serj Tankian was not feasible for health reasons. What exactly is going on with Tankian is not known, he only spoke of “health problems affecting mobility” (Source: metal hammer). Every now and then, rumors surface on social media that Serj Tankian is dead. But these are just “hoax” reports without any truth content.
System of a Down: Tour or new album 2023?
New music from System of a Down is not in sight either. After a long dry spell, fans could at least look forward to the two new songs “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” at the end of 2020. However, this was not a harbinger of a new “SoaD” album, but merely a one-off project with which they wanted to draw attention to the political situation in their home country of Armenia and in Azerbaijan.
Even though there hasn’t been a new System-of-a-Down album since 2005, the band members don’t hide, but are active in solo projects. Serj Tankian released two “Cinematique Series” full-length players around 2021 and an EP (“Perplexed Cities’) as well as a live album. In March 2023 the song “Black Thunder” by The HU was released, in which he participates.
Bassist Savo Odadjian is working on a solo album that will feature Korn’s Jonathan Davis. Guitarist Daron Malakian has released albums with the band Scars on Broadway in 2008 and 2018.
When asked about new music, Serj Tankian compares himself to an architect who used to build a great museum and is now always asked when a new museum will come into being, even though many other beautiful projects are being tackled in the meantime. However, he says that he would be happy to do “a museum” again if “the opportunity arises”. (Source: Metal Injection). Drummer John Dolmayan, on the other hand, regrets that a new System-of-a-Down album is being put off. According to him, a new studio album could have been recorded long ago without the singer (source: rock hard).
So even though System of a Down is officially still a band in 2023, don’t expect any new songs any time soon. A joint tour is more realistic, but here too there is currently no information about a possible concert tour. Crazy Town 2023 is completely different.
