Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer is working to ensure that the infrastructure created by Tesla for charging one’s own electric cars is also opened up to other manufacturers.

Andreas Scheuer (CDU) urges Tesla to release its Supercharger quick charging stations for all electric cars. “I’m in direct contact with manufacturers like Tesla in order to ensure that the existing infrastructure, for example Tesla Supercharger, is also opened for other manufacturers,” said the CSU politician New Osnabrück Newspaper (NOZ) (Paywall). There are technical questions to be clarified, “but I expect that we will come to a solution”.

Scheuer has a uniform payment system for charging stations in mind

There was initially no reaction from Tesla on Wednesday. However, the idea is not new: as early as 2018, the e-car manufacturer spoke of opening its charging stations to third parties. The American electric car manufacturer has been expanding its network of charging stations for years, including in Europe, and it was only in June that the American car manufacturer put its thousandth charging station into operation in Germany.

Scheuer is also thinking of a uniform payment system for charging electric cars, preferably using a smartphone. At the same time, in an interview with NOZ, he called on car manufacturers to improve the search for charging stations. “It needs a high level of intelligence in the vehicle and the link with real-time data as well as the cross-provider data link, so that for the car and the route
optimal charging station is controlled. It cannot be the case that you have to look for your charger yourself on your smartphone when you are out and about. “

Scheuer wants more transparency for prices at charging stations

The providers are also obliged to ensure more transparency in the prices at the charging stations – “if only to enable price comparisons with a petrol or diesel”. He is in negotiations with the Ministry of Economic Affairs so that things can go ahead. It is currently criticized that drivers of electric cars have a poor overview of where charging is cheaper – unlike, for example, with gasoline price apps. afr /dpa
