Super Mario 64 sold for an incredible 1.5 million

If we reported this weekend that the most expensive game ever sold, it will be bulldozed by the stunner of the same auction. An original Super Mario 64 hit the hammer at $1.56 million!

Nintendo’s impact on the gaming world is huge. Who is not familiar with the Super Mario series and its many derivatives? It all started in 1985 with Super Mario Bros. where we were introduced to Mario the plumber in 2D. This evolved into a lot of games with Mario and in 1996 we were able to watch Super Mario for the first time in the then relatively new 3D. The first game that allowed that was Super Mario 64 for, obviously, the Nintendo 64.

Huge amount

Still, it’s on the bizarre side that a variant of this game fetched $1.56 million during an auction. That happened during the same auction in which The Legend of Zelda broke the record for the most expensive game ever with $ 870,000. That’s just not half. And that for Super Mario 64, which was quite a revolution, but far from the first Super Mario. Why is this the most expensive game ever?

whata

The reason for the 1.56 million sales of this copy of Super Mario 64 is the so-called Wata rating. This assesses how original and in what condition a game or accessory is. Obviously 10 is the highest number and this copy of Super Mario 64 is rated 9.8. The Wata scale calls this nothing but brand new. This is the best version of Super Mario 64 in the world and arguably the most original Super Mario game of all time. It is an exceptional condition.

So that’s what you need to have a game sell for $1.56 million, or just over $1.3 million. This is of course the new record. Take a look in the attic to see if you have anything lying around that could be the new record. (via Heritage Auctions)
