Facebook Smart Ray Ban Glasses With Augmented Reality On The Go

Facebook is going to release smart augmented reality glasses together with Ray Ban, the well-known eyewear brand. Very little is known about the functionalities or appearance of the glasses, but it will be the next product to be launched by Facebook.

Smart Facebook Glasses

Facebook will soon release smart glasses that work with augmented reality. Augmented reality or AR is the technology where virtual things are mixed with what you see in the real world. The company is collaborating with Ray Ban on this. The glasses would first appear sometime in 2021, but the corona pandemic may have thrown a spanner in the works, so we will not get a specific timeline for the launch.

“Looking ahead, the next product to come out is our first Ray Ban smart glasses, which we’re making in collaboration with Essilor Lucoticca,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “The glasses have an iconic design and they can do some neat tricks.” Zuckerberg talked about the smart glasses during his briefing on the company’s earnings, which you can read on Seeking Alpha.

The smart Razer Anzu glasses

Still a lot unknown

Unfortunately, we don’t know much more about those “smart tricks”. The glasses may be able to display notifications from your phone on the glasses, answer calls, display navigation instructions, or activate a smart assistant. All these things seem interesting functions, but it still looks like coffee grounds.

Facebook has been researching augmented reality glasses for much longer, and the company even released a prototype called Project Aria in the past. Although we expect that these Ray Ban glasses will get a much fresher look.

There are also other companies that are targeting smart glasses in the post-Google Glass era. Think for example of the Razer Anzu, the Echo Frames from Amazon and the Spectacles from Snap. Although there have been rumors for some time that Samsung is secretly working on augmented reality glasses. Facebook will also release its first smartwatch next summer.
