Sponsored – Spetter, pieter, pater – these are the most amazing lakes and outdoor swimming pools in Austria

If you want to be surprised during your summer holiday, Austria is the ideal country for that. Enough pieces of ‘undiscovered Austria’ to visit in the summer! Because where the mountains are covered with a thick layer of snow in winter, in summer you can marvel at beautiful, green views and there are countless places where you and your family can go for a cooling dip. In short: water fun guaranteed!

Warm pooping

There is a good chance that you have not yet discovered the village of Kramsach in Ferienregion Alpbachtal, but that will certainly change now. Did you know that that is where the warmest natural lakes in Tyrol are located? It is not for nothing that the town has the appropriate nickname ‘Bathtub of Tyrol’. The Seen Plateau consists of four large lakes with an average temperature between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius. No shivering into the cold ice-cold water of a stream, on the contrary: the temperatures are sauna-worthy. The area around it is also recommended – lay a rug in the grass and have a nice picnic, let your children loose in the playground or walk a beautiful walking route along the lakes. Handy tip: The hiking trail along the Reintalersee is also accessible with a pram or buggy. Oh, and if you’re looking for a place to sleep: Ferienregion Alpbachtal has three campsites that are located directly on the lake – so water fun is always close by!
Fancy a little more action when you get in the water? The Alpbachtal also has three adventurous gorges, where you can swim, raft and tub in the wild water of the Brandenberger Ache. Also recommended: the three spacious outdoor pools in the Alpbachtal: the Brixlegg outdoor pool, the Münster outdoor pool or the Kundl outdoor pool.

Water, water, more water

Phew, actually the question is where you can’t swim in the Murau region. There are so many different outdoor swimming locations that it is difficult to choose. The Freibad Murau is definitely recommended, a swimming location of no less than 50,000 square meters. There is a lake, diving board and slide, but you can also visit the restaurant, the beach volleyball court and a large playground – so your children can have fun.
Wherever you will find such a nice combination, is in the recreation center of St. Lorenzen. In addition to a swimming pool with a paddling pool and playground, there is also a restaurant where you can have lunch – which is also allowed, because your stomach will undoubtedly rattle after all that swimming.
Come on, another tip to unlearn it: on the southern edge of Stadl an der Mur
is a nice recreation park. Thanks to the flat shore, the shallow water and the large surface, the bathing water has a pleasant temperature – and it is therefore also very child-friendly. Around the lake you will also find a playground, two tennis courts, a large play park with wooden equipment, a beach volleyball court and a small restaurant.
You get a thoroughly Austrian feeling when you go to the Badesee Krakaudorf
goes, a natural lake at an altitude of 1170 meters. You can swim or paddle in the shallow end, but fishing, boat trips and even fitness are also possible – although we totally understand if you just want to relax in the nice sunbathing area.

Totally zen

Forget the sauna, in Stillebach (in the Pitztal) you can have a spa day, simply, in the middle of nature. That is where the Kneipp complex with hand, foot and tread bath is located. After the Kneipp treatment you can enjoy and relax on the large, quiet sunbathing lawn.
Where you certainly won’t get bored is in the Pitzpark Wenns. There is a natural swimming pond, a children’s swimming pond (maximum 1.35 meters deep), a heated baby pool, a diving tower, a raft, an adventure playground and a café with a sunny terrace. Fortunately, if it comes out of the blue, you can still indulge yourself in the indoor playground. From huge bouncy castles and slides to trampolines and even bowling alleys: there’s a good chance that no one ever wants to go home.

At high altitude

Swimming with a view of the mountains, but also between the mountains. The Högsee is a case of next level, because this lake in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region is located at more than 1800 meters. You get there via the Alpenkopfbahn (just such a gondola ride is a party in itself) and you can practically splash in the water on arrival, at Erlebnispark Högsee. Take a dive from the diving tower, rent a pedal boat or go for a paddle, because it’s all possible. Also nice: the sunbathing area and the adjacent restaurant where you can relax for lunch. The skill games and labyrinths are extra fun for your children. Your only problem is probably that they don’t want to leave here after a day, but hey: that’s mainly a luxury problem, right?

Do nothing more

In the Wildschonau region they know where to go for a good swim, namely in the Freischwimmbad Wildschönau. Well, the photos alone will make you want to put on your swimsuit. There are three swimming pools (one for small children and a large pool with slide and mega crocodile to climb on), a sunbathing area and a playground where you can do everything: climbing on the tower, balancing on the wobbly bridge and jumping on the trampoline . And all that in the lush greenery, in the fresh mountain air.

Swimming day? You take this with you anyway

  • Sunscreen (grease, lubricate, lubricate, especially now that you’re a bit higher in the mountains!)
  • Towels
  • Swimwear and possibly UV suits
  • Caps and sunglasses
  • Water to drink
  • Swimming gear! Think of an inflatable tire, an air mattress or another funny inflatable animal (hello pink flamingo)
  • water shoes
  • Book or magazine (okay, vain hope, but you never know when a moment for yourself will suddenly come, right?)
