Cut off the power supply when there is water in the phone

If the smartphone is still connected to a charger when it comes into contact with liquid, you should immediately disconnect this connection to the power supply. In this way you can prevent a short circuit, which above all can save the battery.

If smoke forms or heat otherwise affects the device and causes changes, you should also not touch the phone under any circumstances.

Turn off your smartphone

After the cell phone comes into contact with liquid, you should switch it off immediately. Newer models in particular have a built-in protection circuit. They turn off automatically if water gets into the case.

In this case, you should not turn the phone back on. This could damage the battery. Additionally, if your phone is in a case, you should remove it carefully to avoid water pooling.

Dry carefully

If liquid has penetrated the smartphone, it is important that it does not spread further. Therefore, you should never shake the device. It can also help to gently dry the cell phone. It is best to use a soft cloth or thick kitchen paper for this.

Some smartphone models can also be opened. If this is the case for you, you can try carefully disassembling your phone and drying the individual parts. But beware: This does not apply to iPhones. If you open it yourself, you lose all the warranty on the device.

Use rice or silica gel

As soon as you have dried the smartphone as well as possible from the outside, you should place it in a desiccant such as rice or silica gel for several hours. You can absorb the remaining water from inside the device. Especially with rice, however, it is important that it was stored airtight beforehand.

To use this trick effectively, fill a sufficiently large bag with the desiccant and then sink your cell phone into it. It is important that the device is surrounded by rice or silica gel on all sides. Then you close the bag and let the smartphone dry for several days.

Under no circumstances should you do this if your cell phone has fallen into the water

You should also avoid heat. It damages the electronics and can make the damage worse. So keep your hands off hair dryers, ovens, heaters and microwaves.

Don’t panic if you get splashed

If your smartphone isn’t completely submerged in liquid, i.e. a glass hasn’t been spilled over it or it hasn’t fallen down the toilet, the damage is often limited.

So if only splash water or a bit of rain has landed on the device, you can simply wipe it off with a cloth or place it on an absorbent pad. In this case, however, it is advisable to switch off the cell phone for a few hours to avoid damage.
