new update for ‘old’ iPhones (and iPads)

If you have an iPhone or iPad that does not support iOS 16.4, you will not be completely left to your own devices. Apple has also released iOS 15.7.4.

iOS 15.7.4 update available

In addition to iOS 16.4, Apple also released iOS 15.7.4 this week. This update is intended for older devices that do not support iOS 16.4. If you have such an older device, download and install the update as soon as possible, because important security holes will be closed.

For example, the older iPhones are vulnerable to a bug in WebKit. That bug allows attackers to run code on an iPhone. Apple acknowledges that this issue may be actively exploited. In any case, the update to iOS 15.7.4 solves the problem. The entire list of vulnerabilities that are fixed by the update is quite long.

iPad updates also available

For the same reason, Apple has released updates for older iPads in addition to iOS 15.7.4. It concerns iPadOS 15.7.4. Apple also released macOS Monterey 12.6.4 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.5 updates for older Macs.

Your iPhone or iPad may not support this update either, but the most commonly used ‘old’ devices are eligible. iOS 15.7.4 is available for the following models:

Download and install iOS 15.7.4

If you have one of the iPhones or iPads mentioned, you can download and install the update. This is done in the same way as you are used to:

  • Open the Settings app;
  • Tap on ‘General’;
  • Tap on ‘Software Update’;
  • Tap ‘Download’ and ‘Install’.

When the update is installed, your iPhone or iPad will automatically restart and you will be completely up to date again.
