New movies and series on Disney+ in June 2023

Disney, what millennial hasn’t grown up with it? On this streaming service you will find all well-known Disney films, from Aladdin to Frozen. But Disney+ is more than just classic Disney content. There is therefore a plus behind it for a reason. The Disney banner also includes Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.

With a Disney+ subscription you can stream unlimited movies and series. You have the choice between paying monthly (€ 9.99) or annually. If you opt for annual, you will benefit from a 15% discount. Below are three new releases for Disney+ in June that we think are worth checking out.

Avatar: The Way of Water

James Cameron is a special man. On the one hand, he pretends to be a true one artiste and he has very specific opinions about his chosen medium, on the other hand he only makes broad-appeal, mind boggling, blockbusters. The world is full of those beautiful contradictions.

Whether or not a movie needs to be 3 hours long, Avatar 2 (running 192 minutes) is a long sit without excuses! So maybe spread it over two evenings (but don’t let James hear it). What do you get in return? Maximum spectacle! When the first Avatar came out, 14 years ago, everyone fell in love with the visual ingenuity. In 2023, an audience is not just surprised by some CGI. Still, the second part of what should eventually become a 5-part franchise is also very impressive.

Everything else is secondary it seems. Part 1 was universally seen as “Dances With Wolves in space”. Even James Cameron eventually admitted that. Part 2 does not take any major steps in that regard. This time we see more than just a blue Kevin Costner wannabe. In The Way of Water, an entire family of Sully’s comes into play. But it doesn’t go much further than that. The bad guy, who apparently came to an irrevocable end at the end of the previous film, is simply taken out of the fridge.

But none of that should matter. With the right mindset, Avatar: The Way of Water offers something that many people are waiting for. Namely: get out of your head for a few hours and enjoy beautiful pictures. Just wait until June 7, then the film can be streamed on Disney +.

The Full Monty

“Okay, listen, I have an idea for a movie! A middle-aged father needs money fast to see his son. So he takes off with a few mates, all at least 40 and also hairy and plump. Completely… undressed. And it still works!”

The fact that those words were once spoken and resulted in a film I still can’t comprehend. Whether it was in an elevator or during a pitch meeting, no idea. It’s nice that it went that way, because The Full Monty (1997) is now a legendary comedy. 25 years later comes the sequel.

The original six are back. A lot older and still not what most people imagine when they close their eyes and think of strippers. Yet they are going to try again to make something of their lives. Some fare better than others, but they all have to deal with the harsh reality of both life and contemporary Sheffield: decay. So the gang tackle their problems the only way they know how, with a “homage” to their lifelong friendship.

True Lies

Another James Cameron vehicle, although this time based on the filmmaker’s previous work. True Lies is based on the 1994 film of the same name. This time in series format, we follow Harry Tasker. His job is just a front, in the deepest secrecy he is a secret agent for Omega Sector.

It’s up to Tasker to balance his secret job and his family life. So far, series and film go hand in hand. Once again, the wife finds out about her husband’s real activities, which results in a lot of fuss. In the film, man and woman save the world together. Will she succeed this time too? Of course there are differences. In 1994 the leading role was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, this time it’s Steve Howey’s turn.

The first eight episodes are already available on Disney+. The last episodes of season 1 will be added in June.
