Account sharing, a shortage of skilled workers and a meeting of generations of chatbots

We hope you had a good day and now we want to give you some exciting information to take with you into the evening. t3n Daily is also available as a podcast and as a newsletter. Here are the topics of the day.

Netflix announces measures against account sharing

Anyone who shares a Netflix account with someone who does not live in the same household will soon have to expect access to be blocked in Germany too. Netflix announced this on Tuesday.

All devices that watch over the same Internet connection where Netflix is used the most count as a household. Where Netflix is used on a TV, Netflix turns all devices on the same network into one household. The company wants to determine the data via IP addresses, but not GPS.

If you want to prevent the shared account from being blocked, you will have to pay 4.99 euros per month in the future – just as much as the cheapest subscription with advertising. Depending on the type of subscription, users can buy a maximum of two additional seats. Netflix expects significantly higher income from this in the long term.

ChatGPT and Eliza don’t get along well

A retro hobbyist brought the modern AI ChatGPT and the chatbot Eliza from the 1960s into conversation. The entertaining result shows how the two bots confuse each other in their willingness to help. They quickly get into an endless loop in which they apologize to the other program for not knowing what it means.

If you send chat AI granny Eliza into a soliloquy, it looks similar: an endless attempt to understand the background of the question, which always fails. To what extent this differs from human communication is a wonderful place to philosophize. In fact, ChatGPT and Eliza are based on similar principles, except that the current AI has significantly more knowledge of the world and therefore more flexibility.

Windows 11 supports rar files

Over 30 years have passed since Eugene Roshal created the Roshal Archive Compressed (rar) file format. Similar to the more common zip files, this is a way of compressing data and making it easier to send. Microsoft has now announced at the Build 2023 developer conference that Windows 11 will make rar files usable without additional software in addition to tar, 7-Zip and gz through the open source project Libarchive.

The exact time for the measure is not yet known. However, the decision comes far too late: due to faster Internet connections and significantly larger storage capacities than at the peak of packaging programs, they have now become significantly less important.

DeSantis announces candidacy on Twitter

Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of the US state of Florida, wants to announce his candidacy for the presidential election in 2024 on Twitter. As a format, he chooses an interview on the audio chat platform Twitter Spaces. None other than Twitter CEO Elon Musk is leading the conversation personally.

Musk, who has repeatedly advocated political neutrality on Twitter in the past, shows once again that he does not seem to fully understand the content of the term and mainly brings it out when his opinion is criticized.

DeSantis is considered Donald Trump’s most dangerous competitor in the US election campaign because he serves the same radical right-wing, anti-democratic electorate, but unlike Trump, he knows how to behave like a serious politician.

IT skills shortage in the public sector

If you are looking for an apprenticeship with secure job prospects, you should aim for a career as an IT worker in the public sector. According to a study by McKinsey & Company, the number of vacancies in the public sector in Germany will increase by 250 percent by 2030. In the IT area in particular, 140,000 positions will become vacant and will probably not be filled.

The working conditions are actually very good: In contrast to the free economy, there is a high level of job security, regular collectively agreed increases in pay and the starting salary is also impressive. Bachelor graduates, for example, start with 4,105 euros gross per month. Currently, maximum salaries of 7,740 euros are possible.

In order to eliminate the shortage of skilled workers, more flexible working models should be offered and access for lateral entrants should be made easier.
