Nearly half of iPhone users go through a trade-in program

In a recent report, the CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC) looked at how users dispose of their old smartphones, revealing big differences in behaviors between iPhone and Android smartphone users. The report thus identified six common methods of “management” of old telephones, namely the trade-in program, sale, conservation, donation, loss/theft/breakage and recycling.

The study reveals that almost half of iPhone users have chosen to go through a trade-in program for their old smartphone, 23% choose to keep their old iPhone and 13% prefer to give it to a relative or to a friend. On the other hand, only 14% of Android users have used the trade-in for their old mobiles.

The report also shows that 15% of new iPhone buyers were previously Android users, possibly due to the often lower trade-in value of Android mobiles. As a reminder, Apple now resumes old iPhones, but the trade-in value is often lower than what can be found elsewhere.
