Logging in in Europe with DigiD is now possible, that’s how it works

DigiD is recognized as a European login under the eIDAS regulation. From now on, the Dutch can log in with their DigiD at European government institutions and at government bodies in other European countries. How does it work exactly?

eIDAS?

eIDAS stands for ‘Electronic Identities and Trust Services’. It is a kind of electronic identification means that ensures that a resident of a European country in question can identify himself in another European country. Once a national electronic identity document has been approved by the European Commission, it can also be used in other European countries. And the latter is now the case with DigiD. With the Dutch electronic proof of identity, your DigiD, you can now also log in to government agencies in other European countries. This can be useful, for example, if you would like to study abroad.

Link ID, driver’s license or passport

To use DigiD in other European countries, you need to link your ID, driving license or passport to your DigiD once. This is for verification. In addition, this is only possible with the DigiD app and the ID proof must have been issued after March 13, 2021. All this is now possible because DigiD now meets the European requirements and guidelines to be officially recognized as a European login method.

The European Union is currently also working on a single digital identity document, which will have to apply to all Europeans. This may replace the current eIDAS regulation.
