‘LG is considering pulling the plug from smartphones’

Are we going to see new smartphones from LG? It is a question that is now circulating. According to an internal memo, LG would consider discontinuing the company’s smartphone division. The (mobile) business at the Korean manufacturer has been bad for a long time.

Is LG stopping with smartphones?

For some time now, there have been rumors here and there that LG is planning to throw in the towel with the company’s mobile division. After this was dismissed by the company as nonsense and completely incorrect in December, it seems to be a step closer. A Korean newspaper reports an internal memo sent to LG employees.

The future seems a lot less bright than in LG’s earlier response. LG would like to put the smartphone division in the willows and thus want to say goodbye to the mobile market. All possible measures are currently being considered, Kwon Bong-seok, CEO of the company, reports. Think of the sale, withdrawal or downsizing of smartphone activities.

The LG G6

LG’s mobile arm is struggling. In the past five years there has been a loss of 4.5 billion dollars. Other LG divisions achieved record after record and clearly did better. LG would have sold only 6.5 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2020, according to research firm Counterpoint. This gives the Korean manufacturer a market share of 2 percent.

During the last edition of the CES, LG showed the LG Rollabe, a smartphone with a rollable screen. In addition, the manufacturer regularly releases a phone with a daring design, as we previously discussed the flip phone in the LG Wing review. The smartphone manufacturer also had the G-series earlier, with which it scored high with the LG G2, where the keys were on the back of the device. It was a development that was still implemented in various models afterwards, such as with the LG G4. However, we also criticize LG. Compared to many other manufacturers, the update policy is deplorable and we believe that LG could certainly have made the difference.

Whether LG is definitely putting an end to the smartphone branch, that has not yet been confirmed. The company has not yet responded to the messages.
