Kirsten Schilder: ‘Even with us it is not always roses and moonshine’

Kirsten Schilder (39) is a columnist for Kek Mama. She is married to singer Nick Schilder and mother of Nikki (11), Julian (10) and Jackie (5).

Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Kirsten and I’m going to entrust things to you in the coming time through this column for Kek Mama! You probably know that uncomfortable feeling when someone in a group suddenly suggests making an introduction round. On the one hand you could have known; after all, there has been an appointment in your calendar for a while with a group of new people. When you came in and quickly introduced yourself to everyone, you already knew it wasn’t enough to say your name quickly and shake some hands.

And yet it overwhelms you. You don’t want to be too long-winded, but summarizing who you are and what you do in a few lines is not exactly an easy task. And exactly that feeling comes over me now, while I’m typing this text.

Transition phase

An identity crisis is a big word, but this introduction is difficult for me. That’s because I’m in the middle of a transition phase. A transitional phase between full-time motherhood and a life in which I spread my wings more and more. First of all, I am a 39-year-old woman, born the daughter of two wonderful parents, and trained as a Special Elementary Education teacher. I have practiced this profession with love for years before I met a very nice man from Volendam. That man you all know as Nick, could sing very well and enjoyed writing songs and making demos with a school friend.

Children

Together with this man I had three wonderful children, who are currently doing everything they can to take me out of my concentration. As they taunt themselves to my left and I throw in some much-needed parental intervention, I type steadily. Believe me, and you will notice that in my columns, it is not always rose scent and moonshine with us either. Like this! I survived the ‘awkward’ proposal round. I hope you enjoy reading my ups and downs on KekMama.nl. I look forward to writing down scenes from my life for you.

Love, your new columnist Kirsten
