Keep the stroller cool on hot days? You should and should not do this

After a long winter – and a spring that wasn’t exactly in a hurry to make things more pleasant – summer is finally on its way. With your baby you can enjoy the paths and avenues, chill in the park or relax on the terrace. While you stretch your legs or put your feet up and work on a healthy tan, your child will have a great time in the stroller.

But how do you best keep it cool on warmer days?

Trust in mom

Where we can choose whether or not to wear a coat, shade or sun, in the wind or in the shelter, your baby is 100 percent dependent on you and your choices. He trusts you to make sure he is comfortable and safe. Babies are less able to withstand heat than adults (yes, such a hat in the summer is indeed not surprising) and that is why it is important to keep your little one cool, so that he does not overheat.

Create shadow

In a pram, when the temperature rises outside, it can also get very hot. Especially when the crib is still being used for the little ones. There is no wind coming through and with a hood folded up to block the sunlight, it can get quite hot. Creating shade in the car is best done by folding the hood and using a small parasol. There are countless models specially designed for the pram for sale. You usually clamp this on the edge of the car and in most cases you can change its position thanks to a flexible rod or a hinge. This way your baby is out of the sun while walking, while there is plenty of room for fresh air and possibly a breath of wind. Parking the stroller in the shade when stationary is a good idea.

Common mistake

An absolute no go is something that many parents do unsuspectingly: protect their child in the car by draping a hydrophilic cloth over the hood. Hanging such a thin cloth made of a breathable fabric that is especially suitable for babies over the hood seems harmless. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. The hydrophilic diaper may provide a lot of shade, but it closes off the pram, as it were. It can get very hot behind such a cloth, especially when the sun shines on it. That hydrophilic cloth is great to put under your child in the car, so that any sweat is absorbed properly.

What do you wear to your baby?

As a rule, you always put on your baby one more layer than yourself. Where you only wear a shirt on warm days, a sleeve is fine with your child. It is important that you choose airy clothing made of breathable material, such as cotton. A romper with an airy layer over it is fine on an average summer day, but on really hot days, only a romper is often sufficient.

Everything okay?

Want to know if your child is too hot? Then feel in the neck and under the feet whether your child is sticky. If in doubt, grabbing a thermometer can’t hurt either. If the temperature rises above 37.5 °C, your child is too hot and it is wise to take off a layer of clothing. If your baby is drinking well (do offer to drink regularly), has enough wet diapers and is lively, it is going well.

Other measures

If you go outside in hot weather, try to avoid the hottest times of the day, between 12 and 3 p.m. In addition, babies younger than six months are not allowed in the sun at all. But since you can also burn in the shade and with cloud cover, sunscreen is one must. Protect your vulnerable little one with factor 50, put on a sun hat and keep a close eye on him; skin burns at a young age can increase the risks of skin cancer later in life. Of everything you need to take with you when you go out, drinking (cool) drinks is also a must for your child.
