While the government has two months to introduce the very controversial technical control of two-wheelers, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has just made a surprise announcement.

During an interview granted to our colleagues from Brut, the Matignon tenant confirmed that it will be possible to get his driving license at 17And this from 2024. According to the head of government, this measure will represent “a real plus” especially for young apprentices.

The permit at 17 from 2024, and extended assistance to students in high school Pro

Remember that currently, it is already possible to pass the driving license at 17, provided you have started accompanied driving from the age of 16. However, it remains impossible to hit the road independently before reaching the age of majority. This will soon no longer be the case. In addition, apprentices will no longer be the only ones to be able to benefit from state aid of €500 to finance their permit. In effect, this boost will also be available from next year to students enrolled in vocational high schools.

When we know that road accidents are the leading cause of death among 18-24 year olds, this lowering of the legal driving age raises concerns. On this point, Elisabeth Borne promised that the government and the competent authorities would be “very attentive to the level required” to get the license at 17 years old. At the same time, the executive would like to strengthen road safety certificates, to make its preliminary tests a kind of “pre-code” of the road.

Mixed receptions for the license at 17

Unsurprisingly, the Prime Minister’s announcement provoked many reactions, sometimes hostile, sometimes welcoming. As reported by our colleagues from Figarothe president of the League against road violence Jean-Yves Lamant finds this measure dangerous : “We are the opposite of what needs to be done to halve the number of road deaths by 2030″.

For his part, Pierre Chasseray, general delegate of 40 million motorists, welcomes this new system. However, he invites the government to review its copy on certain points. According to him, it would be wiser to authorize the license at 17 for young people already in accompanied driving since they were 16 years old. Finally, the leader of ECF driving schools welcomes this measure with open arms, but nevertheless encourages the executive to establish a “compulsory post-licence training”.
