iPhone 14 Pro camera: these are the innovations

The camera of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) has received quite a few innovations, according to Apple. But what has really changed? And what not? This is what you need to know!

Read on after the ad.

One of the most striking innovations (besides the Dynamic Island) in the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is the new camera. For example, you now have a 48-megapixel camera at your disposal for the first time and it is now even better at photographing in low light. But what exactly is new?

Wide-angle camera: wider lens, narrower aperture

The biggest changes of the iPhone 14 Pro camera are in the main camera (this is the wide-angle camera). But when you look at the back of the iPhone 14 Pro, you see that all the cameras have become somewhat larger.

There is also a lot of news internally. It is striking that the aperture of the main camera has become somewhat smaller, which means that the lens can absorb less light. This is probably necessary to be able to work with the larger sensor.

The photo experts at Halide (from the camera app) have figured out that the wide-angle camera can capture 20 percent more light than the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) camera, even with this smaller aperture, thanks to the larger sensor.

Wider ISO range, less noise

The wide-angle camera sensor also has a wider ISO range. With a wider ISO range, you can still take good photos in low light. This is often accompanied by a lot of noise in your photos.

Apple does this in a cool way. The sensor combines four pixels of the 48-megapixel photo into a 12-megapixel image. This makes the noise a lot less in the final photo. Apple calls this “quad-pixel.”

By the way, you don’t notice all the work that your iPhone camera does in the background. In addition, the camera apps from other manufacturers also remain usable.

48-megapixel and minimum distance

You can only take the 48-megapixel photos by shooting in ProRAW. That does mean that your images will be a lot bigger. Each photo is then about 60 to 80 MB. Thanks to the high ISO range, the quad-pixel recordings and the new sensor-shift stabilization, the quality of your night photos will increase considerably.

Finally, the minimum focusing distance has increased. It is now 200 mm instead of 150 mm. That may not seem like much, but you will probably notice this. You can then focus a little less close. You can of course switch to macro mode, but the ultra-wide-angle camera that uses this mode is a bit less good than your main lens.

iPhone 14 Pro: zoom camera, ultra wide-angle camera and front camera

Apart from a slightly higher ISO range, the zoom camera (telephoto lens) has no real innovations. Fortunately, that is different with the ultra-wide-angle camera. It has some excellent improvements for use in low light.

This has the camera thinking of the larger sensor and a higher ISO sensitivity. Apple indicated during the iPhone 14 event that this camera takes ‘up to 3x better images’.

The biggest change of the front camera is the variable focus and autofocus. This allows your iPhone to focus better on your selfies and that is of course always a plus!
