‘iPhone 13 will not get a reverse charging function’

The news has been brought out by Mark Gurman, an Apple journalist who is usually well informed. According to him, the company has long considered equipping the next iPhone with reverse charging, but decided against it.

Gurman is unaware of the motivation behind this decision. The Apple journalist does report that the company will not bring the function to a product “in the near future”. According to Gurman, Apple has been working on the function to provide other devices with power since the release of the iPhone 11 (in 2019).

iPhone 12 gets MagSafe battery pack

Furthermore, the Apple insider claims that the company is currently working on a MagSafe battery pack (battery cover) for the iPhone 12. This accessory snaps onto the back of a phone and has an extra battery. This battery case would supply power to the device via MagSafe, the magnetic connection that made a comeback on the iPhone 12 last year.

This rumor is in line with a discovery made last week. The source code of iOS 14.5, the next software update for the iPhone, shows that Apple is getting ready to release this MagSafe battery case. iOS 14.5 is currently being tested by app developers. It is not yet known when all users will be able to get started with the new iPhone software version.

About reverse charging

Competitive Android phones have long had reverse charging. This allows phones to pass on power to accessories that you put on the back, such as the charging box of earbuds or a smartwatch.

Apple has filed multiple patents in the past describing such a feature. It is therefore certain that the company is (or was) busy with reverse charging.
