Inexpensive electric cars are a long time coming

VW has a clear goal: to sell e-cars that customers can afford even if their wallets aren’t quite as full. So far, however, there is not too much to see. The ID.2 should fix it for less than 25,000 euros. But then it’s probably over for now.

VW boss makes it clear: E-car for 20,000 euros only “the step after next”

There’s still one really cheap e-car from VW not reality. In an interview with the Bild newspaper, CEO Oliver Blume points out the ID.3 or the brother Cupra Born. But the electric cars are clearly positioned in the middle class at over 39,000 and over 38,000 euros respectively. So there can be no question of a Stromer at an entry-level price.

That is set to change with the ID.2 and other models: Customers could look forward to “Various e-cars from the group for around 25,000 euros be happy. They should come onto the market in the middle of the decade,” Blume confirms the previous plans (source: Picture).

Lease an e-car and collect an environmental bonus

However, Blume rejects even cheaper prices for electric cars from the VW Group – at least for the near future: Not under, but “in the Price region around 20,000 euros” is for VW “the step after next. I think that’s a worthwhile consideration and a sensible goal for the VW brand,” said the CEO.

On the one hand, this is a confirmation that VW Further push down prices for e-cars want. On the other hand, Blume is less determined than VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer had previously given. He was already talking about that one Volksstromer for around 20,000 euros 2026 to 2027 could come onto the market.

VW has to keep up with cheap e-cars because the competition is fast:

Whether the Volksstromer will ultimately drive under the VW brand or one of the other brands will be allowed to run has yet to crystallize. At the important one Price limit of 25,000 euros, VW relies on a trio from ID.2, Cupra Raval and a Skoda brother whose name we do not know yet. It is conceivable that it should run similarly one price level below.
