‘I think weekends away with my partner are more important than our family holiday’

Plan carefully

“Ten years ago, after the birth of our daughter, we promised each other that we would continue to make enough time for ourselves,” Sarah says. It took careful planning, but it worked: in recent years, the couple has vacationed together six times. “All to places we wouldn’t visit with the kids. We went camping, we went on long bike tours and a great trip to Las Vegas.’

Best friends

According to Sarah, a trip like this isn’t just about intimacy. ‘It’s great, sex without being disturbed. But it is much more than that. We become best friends again, reminding each other why we fell in love again. And every time we come back we embrace the role of mom and dad again, but we do realize that we are more than that.’

‘Example for the children’

As their children get older, there are more and more destinations for them to visit as a family. “But I’ll keep making sure that the two of us are still out and about,” Sarah says.

“There’s nothing wrong with family vacations, but I’m not responsible for making sure they get to experience it all in the first 18 years of their lives. Plus, my husband and I still have a long vacation bucket list. And by putting our marriage first, I want to set an example for our children.”
