Challenge from Ford boss: E-cars are so cheap

The money is no longer loose for consumers. A new electric car is out of the question for many – especially since electric cars are still more expensive to buy than petrol or diesel. But it shouldn’t stay that way. For the Ford boss, the price war has long since flared up.

Cheap e-cars are only a matter of time at Ford

Production costs for electric cars will fall – drastically. That’s what Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, is expecting. Instead of charging upwards of $40,000 as has been the case up to now, manufacturers will soon be fighting a price war around the $25,000 mark. “I think ours Industry is definitely heading for a huge price war”according to the Ford boss (source: ABC News).

This should be made possible by lower production costs. According to Farley, they should drop to $18,000 by one Starting price of $25,000 for electric cars to reach. Currently, you have to reckon with these 18,000 dollars just for the battery in the electric car. However, it is not only the primary products that are to become cheaper.

Construction processes are to be optimized and accelerated at Ford, but the e-cars themselves will also change. If you minimize the wind resistance of a pick-up, for example, you can get the same range with a smaller and therefore cheaper batteryaccording to the CEO.

$25,000 limit for electric cars won’t fall until 2026

So are e-cars getting cheaper now? At least not immediately. The current market situation, with high raw material prices and availability problems, is even causing prices to rise significantly. Even Ford cannot do anything about it overnight. “It will take a little while” like Farley.

Even if e-cars become cheaper in a few years, buying them today can be worthwhile:

He assumes that the cheaper prices for electric cars of the “second generation” will come into play. The first Generation 2 model is scheduled to be launched in 2026. Until then have to Ford customers are probably still waiting for a cheap electric car.

VW is also planning an entry-level electric vehicle in this price category – and it will also be a few years before VW does so. The one predicted by Farley So there are already signs of a price war.
