Google Photos receives update with new Real Tone filters

Google Photos is not only a place to store photos and videos, but you can also use the app to easily edit photos. You can choose from a number of filters, but they did not always give an accurate representation of different skin colors. Google wants to solve this problem with the new Real Tone filters.

Google Photos gets Real Tone filters

Google has started improving the display of different skin tones with the launch of its Pixel 6 series. That’s why Monk Skin Tone Scale was created. This is an open source library to make machine learning of images more inclusive by better interpreting colors and tones. Click on the video in the tweet below to see the filter in action.

Following on from this, Google announced the Real Tone filters for Google Photos at this year’s Google I/O. These Real Tone filters are made to reproduce all skin tones in a realistic way. The feature was due to be rolled out in the coming weeks, and the search giant has now launched it. The new Real Tone filters should be visible in the Filters tab of the Google Photos editor. You will then see filters with the names Playa, Isla, Honey and Desert. Google gives on Twitter the filters are specifically designed to “work well on a variety of skin tones”. As soon as you select such a filter, you will see on the screen that it is a Real Tone filter.
