Finally more privacy in WhatsApp!

WhatsApp is finally adding some features that improve your privacy. We’ve been waiting for that for a while!

WhatsApp has just about everyone. We are all members of more WhatsApp groups than we would really like, and we remain a member of the in-laws group so as not to offend anyone. If we regret a message, we are unlucky after an hour, because then it is no longer possible to withdraw.

Until then. Because WhatsApp is finally announcing a number of privacy-enhancing changes that we can’t imagine parent company Meta could not have thought of earlier.

Secretly leave an App group

After this update, you can finally sneak out of an App group! Well almost then. Now the entire group will receive a notification if you are Sjaak Afhaak. Soon only the administrator of the group. Quite progress though. Do you not immediately get all your colleagues over you who prefer to share something with you at midnight.

In addition, since last year there was already a possibility that was baptized “one-time display”. This means that photos and videos that users have indicated that they can only be shown once will disappear from the chat afterwards. WhatsApp will now also block screenshots. That way, gone is really gone.

Online Status

You can already hide when you were last online. But at the moment it is always visible when you are online. In a conversation you will see the name “online now”. You will soon be able to change that notification.

You can choose to show it only to your contacts, or hide it from specific people. For example for your mother-in-law… Incidentally, that means that you can no longer see their status. But good everything for a little privacy in your WhatsApp.

Clear messages

Deleting a message for yourself has been possible for years and currently you can still delete the message up to an hour after sending your message. That time is considerably extended to 2.5 days. Although the chance that someone has not yet read it does not seem very high to us. But if you really regret it, you can still erase the evidence. A notification of message deleted will remain.

Competitor Telegram has no time limit at all and permanently offers the option to erase your words. Apple’s iMessage also plans an erase function but has a limit of up to two minutes in their head there. So much shorter.

timer

Also announced are two-step verification and the complete blocking of specific contacts. Another cool feature that is coming is the setting of a timer. You can make a chat available for 24 hours. There will be a default setting that allows you to make a message disappear after 24 hours. All for your privacy.

It is not yet known when all WhatsApp privacy functions will be available exactly, but we expect it very soon.
