Sony Android 11 plans

Sony is releasing its first Android 11 update this month and will come with more upgrades later. The company is relatively early and now lists in a blog which devices can expect an Android 11 update. The Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II will be updated first, then older phones will follow. These are Sony’s update plans:

Sony does not announce exact release dates, but starts this month with the rollout of Android 11 for the Xperia 1 II. Next month, the Xperia 5 II and Xperia 10 II will follow, followed by the original Xperia 1 and 5. Older devices like the Xperia XZ3 and Xperia 10 (Plus) don’t seem to be updated and are stuck on Android 10.

The Xperia L4, a budget device that appeared at the beginning of this year, will not get an update and even runs on Android 9.0 (Pie). This version of the mobile operating system is two years old and it seems that Sony is not making an Android 10 update available for this device.

This is new in Android 11

Android 11 is mainly dedicated to your messages and notifications and introduces, for example, the handy chat bubbles. These are icons of conversations that remain on your home screen, even if you are using other applications in the meantime. This way you can always open a conversation and tap a response, and you don’t have to start the chat app every time.

Also new in Android 11: one-time permissions for apps. After the update to the latest version, you can give apps one-time access to, for example, your camera or location. After that, this permission is automatically revoked. This way your privacy is better guaranteed.
