WhatsApp awaits trial in India. But paradoxically, he’s there for a good man

In India, a very interesting lawsuit has started between the local authorities and the communicator WhatsApp, hence its parent company Facebook Inc. As is well known, popular applications have faced a wave of criticism in recent weeks for adjusting the rules for collection of user data and handling them. (Did you know, for example, what happens if you refuse to accept them?) Although the idea immediately arises that in India the service is on the verge of precisely because of these rules (as in Germany), paradoxically the opposite is true. WhatsApp is suing the Indian authorities because they allegedly want too much through American application intrude on users’ privacy.

What exactly is the subject of the dispute? The GOI requires WhatsApp to provide various types of user data under current laws and regulations. For example for detecting crimes, which in many ways resembles the situation in the USA. The court struggle is full of technical details and very branched into several areas, but one specific one stands out. WhatsApp is being sued in India mainly because the government wants a chance tracing the original senders of specific messages.

Such a requirement is in direct conflict with the service’s policy and, in fact, with the technical side of its operation. If WhatsApp was to satisfy India, it would have to satisfy everyone turn off encrypted transmissions, have an opportunity view the content of messages and you also link to a specific sender. The situation is quite complicated and a large part of court documents are not even public. Even so, it is interesting to see how WhatsApp (Facebook Inc.) became, for a change, a “good guy” and an advocate of user privacy. It can be assumed that the dispute will drag on for a while.

What do you think about this principle of detecting crime?
