European ultimatum for WhatsApp – Apparata

Chat service WhatsApp still has one month to better inform its users about the general terms and conditions, because otherwise…

The European Commission has sent a letter to the offices of the chat service with an ultimatum. If the app doesn’t make the rules and conditions clearer and simpler to its users within a month, then things will change. We think then, because it is not really known what exactly there will be for sanctions after that one month. Anyway, at least Europe is writing an angry letter.

WhatsApp must also immediately tell you whether they sell or otherwise use the users’ data to make money. And especially how exactly they do that.

The letter urges that European consumer protection rules be fully complied with now. European Commissioner of Justice Didier Reynders also sent a worried letter to WhatsApp in January.

Whatsapp needs to make sure that users understand what they accept and how their personal data is used. For commercial purposes, in particular to provide services to commercial partners. I reiterate that I expect WhatsApp to fully respect EU rules protecting consumers and their fundamental rights

WhatsApp itself responded earlier by saying that the necessary information about updates will be provided to users. According to Didier, that information only causes confusion. That is why we now have the ultimatum of one month (without clear consequences) to show consumer associations that the chat service’s working method complies with consumer legislation.
