Electricity will soon cost you dearly

Over time, electric cars should become cheaper than combustion engines, thanks to lower running costs and lower electricity prices. But the days of cheap electricity are over for the time being. Experts from the Center for Automotive Research headed by autopope Ferdinand Dudenhöffer have found out that it will soon no longer be possible to calculate with cheap e-cars.

“From 2023, electric cars will be at a significant cost disadvantage for consumers in Germany”he says (source: Handelsblatt). Because the environmental bonus will be reduced at the turn of the year and electricity prices will increase significantly in the future, e-cars will no longer be able to outperform their combustion engine counterparts in terms of costs. This is the conclusion of a study by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), in which the car experts compare the costs of three current electric cars against combustion engines: Fiat 500 (e), Opel Mokka(-e) and Tesla Model 3 against BMW 3 Series .

On average, e-cars currently achieve one Price advantage with the total costs of around 36 euros per month. They come to around 596 euros, while the combustion engines have an average full cost of around 631 euros. The calculation was based on a kWh price of 32 cents for charging current and 1.87 euros for a liter of petrol. The ADAC recently made a similar comparison – and came to a mixed conclusion.

Dudenhöffer says: “Electromobility works under these conditions.” Only the price of electricity is already higher. According to the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management, the costs for an average household are already over 37 cents.

In a medium scenario designed by the CAR, a price of 50 cents per kWh will soon be classified as realistic. That would destroy the price advantage of e-cars, even with a full environmental bonus, they say. If that falls from 2023, things will really go downhill for e-cars. With an electricity price of 32 cents/kWh, electric cars are then an average of 32 euros per month more expensive than combustion engines. If 50 cents per kWh are due, e-cars would be beaten with a monthly cost disadvantage of 71 euros.
