Capsule hotels in Japan: brilliant or crazy?

Just sleep. The ‘Capsule Hotel’ in Japan was therefore created. Japanese craziness or a brilliant solution?

Every city has to deal with it: you want to properly organize the city center. Of course, this puts the interests of the resident or visitor first, but then it has to fit. That does not always work. All the way in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, lack of space is a major problem.

To spare

Saving space is done in many ways, but one of the nicest ways is and remains the Capsule Hotel. This is a collective name for a type of hotel in Japan that is intended to save space. Normally a hotel room is a reasonable room, even if you are shopping on a budget. Definitely not in a Capsule Hotel. Then you literally get a capsule.

Capsule Hotel

The idea is simple: the ‘hotel rooms’ are arranged in a long corridor. Stacked and lined up you have the capsules you get when you book a ‘room’. We hardly dare to call it rooms, because it is literally a bed with a little bit of breathing space around it. It’s a bit like walking into a laundromat, but all washing machines are hotel rooms. You get some little extras to store stuff in, but otherwise the capsules are extremely small.

Cheap

Why would you do this to yourself? A city like Tokyo probably still has a well-known hotel chain somewhere where you can get real rooms. There are two types of people who see a Capsule Hotel stuck. The first group is bargain hunters. A Capsule Hotel is very cheap: sometimes as low as 20 euros per night. If sleeping is your main goal, 20 euros is very little.

To work

The second user of a Capsule Hotel is very simple: the Japanese himself, instead of a tourist. Japanese people who temporarily work in Tokyo often use the Capsule Hotels, because their day consists of a lot of work. At the end of the day you won’t be doing much fun anyway, so settle down in your capsule, ready to work again the next day. Even then, the low costs appeal and the Capsule Hotel is a perfect solution.

Save space and money: only the Japanese would dare to convert a kind of luxury morgue into a hotel. However, the Capsule Hotel is a good solution to an existing problem. Would you like to sleep there?
