Apple has already announced iOS 17, but a new iOS 16 update is coming to your iPhone first. Here’s what’s new in iOS 16.6 beta 3.

Read on after the ad.

Apple launches iOS 16.6 beta 3

Shortly after unveiling iOS 17, Apple released the third test version of iOS 16.6. The beta is intended for developers, so they can get started with the new features right away. iOS 16.6 is the last update before the launch of iOS 17. That update will only come to your iPhone in September, after the presentation of the iPhone 15 series.

Apple is currently busy preparing for iOS 17, so it is expected that iOS 16.6 will be another minor update. This suspicion is confirmed with iOS 16.6 beta 3, because at the moment little is known about exactly which new functions are coming to your iPhone. The test version seems to reveal at least one new feature.

iMessage Contact Key Verification

In iOS 16.6, iMessage will probably get a new feature that should ensure user safety. In beta 3 of iOS 16.6, the first indications for iMessage Contact Key Verification can be seen. With this new feature, users will automatically receive a warning when sending a message to an untrusted contact on iMessage. You will also be warned if you receive a message from a potentially untrustworthy sender.

With the new feature in iOS 16.6 beta 3, it is therefore possible to confirm a verification code from each other, so that you are sure that you are dealing with the right person. This should make the digital environment safer, especially for people with a greater risk of digital threats.

These include journalists, activists and government employees. The average iPhone user will therefore not notice much of the new security feature. It is not yet clear whether everyone will be able to use the feature in iOS 16.6, or whether iMessage Contact Key Verification will be available at a later date. In any case, Apple lays the foundation for the new feature in iOS 16.6 beta 3.

Official release iOS 16.6 will take a while

The third beta of iOS 16.6 has no other new features as far as we know. The official release of iOS 16.6 will take a while, because the update will probably not be released until the summer. Apple released iOS 15.6 on July 21 last year, so we expect iOS 16.6 to be released around the same time. This will be the last iOS 16 update before the arrival of iOS 17.
