A single player adventure with the coolest losers in space

No plan works that well and there is always a fight – the Guardians of the Galaxy are a bunch of chaos and maybe that’s why they get their own game from Eidos-Montreal.

In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Eidos-Montréal makes you the constantly questioned head of the dysfunctional Guardians family. In this Single player adventure you slip into the rocket boots of Peter Quill, more or less known as Star-Lord.

The rest of the Guardians are of course also on board, in the form of the cast best known from the films. Together with Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot you always have a good twelve percent of a plan and get by that way.

A new adventure for the Guardians of the Galaxy

The game finds its setting a few years after a major galactic war and the universe is still preoccupied with the aftermath. In this scenario, as Peter Quill, the Guardians of the Galaxy gathered around you to act as “Heroes for Hire” make the quick buck.

On one of these adventures, two of the Guardians go pretty bad stupid bet that ultimately becomes a threat to the entire universe in an unfortunate chain reaction. The heroes have to face this threat, after all, it’s their fault.

A pure single player experience: But you are never alone

You will play the game alone as a Star-Lord, but the Guardians will be with you all the time. The conversations of the unequal group are not just simple cutscenes, you as a player have the choice to react differently to situations. If there is a dispute between two members, you sometimes have to decide which side to take. Even during the missions, you make the decision on how to proceed at individual points.

These decisions can either only affect the short-term course or have far-reaching consequences. You not only lead the team in social interactions, but also in combat.

Fight as a team

As a Star-Lord, your main weapons are of course the two Element Guns, which use the powers of the four basic elements. You can also move quickly across the battlefield thanks to the rocket boots. You use them for quick slides or to hover over your enemies for a short time.

You also direct the team in combat. Each Guardian has four skills, which you can trigger individually and specifically, but your AI colleagues also take part in the fight independently. You can also join the team support with boosts, to turn the tide in critical situations.

Don’t expect the MCU guardians

In partnership with Marvel, Eidos-Montréal has one found his own look for the Guardians, which shows clear differences to the film versions. For example, Gamora wears full armor and Groot also wears “clothes” made by Rocket. The Guardians have retained the bickering and the biting humor.

Overall, the game follows a very colorful and slightly comic-like art style. The Guardians in particular show great attention to detail, such as the little Groot who is woven into Rocket’s goatee or the 80s badges on the Star-Lord’s jacket.

80s Soundtrack: A Must for Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter Quill is a child of the 80s and his mixtapes are an unmistakable trademark of the Guardians. In the game of Eidos-Montréal, music will of course also play a major role. To make it sound good, a lot of well-known hits from the 80s have been licensed. Are there too Songs by Kiss, Iron Maiden, Wham !, Blondie and Pat Benatar.

Release plans

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is slated for October 26, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One and PC. It is a matter of a pure single player game, for the no DLCs are planned and that wants to do without microtransactions entirely.

Personal conclusion

A linear single-player adventure for a large franchise that is simply complete at release and for which there are no service game frills? With such a rarity you have to be prudish. For me, the whole thing stands or falls with the story and its characters. The Guardians themselves have the potential for great entertainment, and working with Marvel and the comic book writers can make the story really good too.

I’m still a bit skeptical about the combat system, it looks a little flat. But that’s just my very first impression. I’m curious to see if there will be some form of character development and how the Guardians’ skills can be combined in combat.
