The finale of this fantasy film series wasn’t supposed to exist

This fantasy adaptation was supposed to be a two-parter, but then the director changed his mind. Not to the advantage of the films, as has been criticized.

In 2014 came along “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” the last Hobbit adaptation from “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman in the cinemas. Amazon Prime Video shows the grand finale of the trilogy, which shouldn’t actually exist, in the stream. At least that was the status so far. As of Monday, April 16, 2023 you can now watch the last part of the “Lord of the Rings” prequel from the streaming provider Joyn stream. A surprise, as Amazon protects all parts of the popular fantasy franchise like Frodo does the one ring. We tell you more about the controversial third part of the “Hobbit” series.

If you can’t get enough of the stories from Middle-earth, you should be happy about the new “Lord of the Rings” series. In the video we tell you everything you should know about it.

The end of the Hobbit movies

The film picks up right where its predecessor, The Desolation of Smaug, left off. With no introduction or flashback, viewers are thrown into the fray of battle against the dragon Smaug. But that is quickly put an end to. And this is exactly where the problem lies for many critical voices: should the third Hobbit film really have to exist? Because actually the scene should have belonged in the previous film and thus formed the conclusion of the Hobbit film adaptations. The story was told.

True Lord of the Rings fans should know these facts about the series:

The background to the third “Hobbit” film

In fact, only two films were originally planned for the Hobbit films. The shooting too “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” ended in March 2011. After individual scenes were reshot in July 2012, the post-production of the two films started almost simultaneously. But then it was surprisingly announced that Jackson was planning another film adaptation. This surprised many, since the almost 400-page children’s book by JRR Tolkien was hardly a template with sufficient content for three films at the same time.

In addition, a few obstacles were put in the way of the third film adaptation: in addition to countless postponements Guillermo del Toro then jumped off as well, who should have been directing instead of Jackson. However, all obstacles were successfully removed by the production team and filming began in October 2012 and lasted until July 2013. Unfortunately for many “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” fans. Because according to critical voices, the final film adaptation should be noted that the plot was compulsively drawn out. Scenes, described in a few words in the book, stretch across the screen for minutes. Is it still worth watching the film? Definitely, because while the plot leaves a lot to be desired, Jackson isn’t known as one of the great film directors for nothing. Want to experience the Middle-earth movies in full?
