Ubisoft reveals big secret after 13 years
Do you still remember the adversary from Far Cry 2? The jackal was an American arms smuggler that you should kill to end the civil war in Africa. 13 years later, Ubisoft finally reveals what the antagonist is really about.
From hero to villain: the jackal is Jack Carver
While you were still on a tropical island in the first Far Cry, Ubisoft took a completely different direction with Far Cry 2 and sent you as mercenaries to a civil war area in Africa. Your task: find an arms smuggler named “the jackal” who supplies both sides with weapons and kill him.
But who is the jackal anyway? In the game you only get a few details – but fans of the series had the theory many years ago that the American antagonist could be the main character of the first game: Jack Carver. Outwardly, both characters are very similar, they both have the same career in the military behind them, and Carver was also hired as a smuggler back then.
Ubisoft has so far kept a low profile on this matter and has not disclosed any further details – at least until now. In an interview, Clint Hocking, Creative Director of Far Cry 2, revealed the secret of the 13-year-old game:
“The jackal is supposed to be Jack Carver from the original Far Cry. (…) Jack Carver was a kind of crook, smuggler and gun dealer in the original Far Cry. The idea was that (the jackal) just be him – 10 years later or so – after seeing what happened on this island.
Maybe it was drug-induced, maybe it’s post-traumatic stress disorder, or maybe it’s real. But the idea is that a decade later he improved his smuggling skills and got involved in this conflict. “
