4 things to keep in mind when buying a smartphone

Buy a new smartphone? Nice! Know what to look out for. We give you tips.

The range of smartphones is huge. I can well imagine that sometimes you have no idea where to start. Especially if price is an important factor. Because which smartphone is the best for, for example, a price tag of less than 400 euros? We give you a number of tips that you should pay attention to when you buy a new smartphone.

1. Processor

We all want a fast smartphone. It is therefore good to pay attention to what kind of processor the smartphone has. Nowadays, all modern devices are not really slow like they used to be. If the smartphone is equipped with a chipset of MediaTek or Qualcomm at least you can rest assured that it’s good stuff. Apple also makes the chips itself, so you won’t find these brands with them. Apple’s A processors are also just fine.

2. Camera

Funnily enough, the number of megapixels doesn’t say much. A smartphone with a 50MP camera doesn’t have to be better than a 24MP one, even if that may sound contradictory. If you really want to enjoy a smartphone with a good camera, pay attention to the island on the back. If there are many cameras, the device is also versatile. In the year 2022, a primary lens, a wide-angle lens and a macro lens are very nice to have.

3. Memory and Storage

You don’t only get a fast smartphone with a good processor. Plenty of RAM is also important. Walk away when you see 4 GB of RAM, because that is no longer very modern, especially on an Android smartphone. 6 GB is the norm, anything above that is luxury. You often see 8 GB and sometimes even 12 GB on flagship smartphones.

A phone with little storage does not have to be a problem, as long as you can expand it with a microSD. 64 GB without the possibility to expand is too little. 128 GB and above is fine. Often there are several model variants of smartphones with, for example, 128 GB, 256 GB or even 512 GB.

4. Market launch model

Do your homework to check when a smartphone has been released. You may just be looking at a phone that was launched as early as 2020 or early 2021. If you want to do with a smartphone for three to five years, it is better to go for a newer model. Smartphones are often refreshed every year. A Samsung released in February 2021 will most likely get a new version in February 2022. Then go for the new one. Not only do you have better hardware, but also better support for updates so that you can safely use the smartphone for a longer period of time.
