4 OS updates, 5 years of security

OnePlus has made major changes to the brand’s update policy. OnePlus will make significant improvements to this, and to be honest, it won’t be a moment too late. OnePlus once guaranteed fast updates; now that is irrelevant and an update is often accompanied by (disturbing) errors and bugs. Now the brand promises improvement in this and comes with a new update policy.

OnePlus update policy

The new update policy will apply to devices released from 2023 onwards, and only selected devices. Presumably these are high-end devices. Although Samsung also updates cheaper devices for a long time, it is unknown whether OnePlus will also apply the new update policy for the Nord series, for example, no further details are given. The new update policy includes four Android OS updates and five years of security updates. No information is given whether these will be rolled out more often than now. OnePlus rolls out security updates every two months and not monthly like Samsung, for example.

Oxygen OS 13.1

OxygenOS 13.1 will be rolled out in the first half of 2023, OnePlus says, and will be an improvement on the previously introduced functions in OxygenOS 13. It should bring a large number of improvements to the user experience. Security is also being further addressed through the Private Safe function that is being improved. An improved version of Digital Wellbeing is also planned and we can expect improvements in the field of photo albums and software optimization. No details are shared about this either.

OxygenOS 14 is now also in development. This version will appear next year, but OnePlus has not yet indicated what changes we can expect in this.
