YouTube star tears up one of Steam’s biggest survival hits

The British YouTuber SovietWomble is actually known on the internet for his “bullshitries”, in which he cuts together funny scenes from games and provides them with suitable overlays and animations. For some time now, however, he has also discovered elaborate video essays. In his current 3-hour video, he dissects one of Steam’s biggest survival hits The Forest down to the smallest detail and reveals that much of the supposed story simply doesn’t make sense.

The Forest: One of Steam’s greatest survival hits

In his latest video, SovietWomble talks for almost 3 hours about one of the formerly biggest survival games on Steam: The Forest. In the open-world hit, which originally entered the Early Access program in 2014, you take on the role of a plane crash survivor struggling to survive on a remote peninsula while searching for his son, who is featured in the introductory scene of a is kidnapped by an unknown man.

But the island harbors many dangers. Because the peninsula is home to cannibals who want to get at the player’s leather. And also obnoxious humanoid mutants up to mischief on the peninsula. Over 400,000 players have now rated the game on Steam, 95 percent of them are positive. So The Forest is a real hit for most.

YouTuber discovers massive logic gaps in The Forest

WARNING: Spoilers for the story of The Forest follow from here on out.

As a big survival fan, SovietWomble also put a lot of time into The Forest and after almost 30 hours finished the game’s story, which revolves around a company that researches an ancient and magical artifact and thus creates the horrible mutants. But although he was initially enthralled by the mystery surrounding the peninsula, After the end everything collapsed like a house of cards. Because, as the YouTuber impressively demonstrates in his video, a number of questions remain unanswered and countless discoveries simply don’t make any sense.

Here you can watch the full video of SovietWomble:

  • The cannibals stand never directly related to the main storywhich unfolds around the Sahara Corp.
  • On the peninsula are the remains of a film crew, a climbing team, and a scuba diving group who appear to have had equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Why is no one looking for these people?
  • The game character can build totems from the remains of his victims and even make armor from their bones, but not from the metal from the crashed plane. Why does he come up with such ideas?
  • When exploring the cave systems, one repeatedly encounters skeletons of people, apparently during a prayer or the like burned in a split second became. This mystery also remains unexplained forever.
  • Tents said to be hundreds of years old are still standing and show hardly any signs of wear — the same is true of the Bibles of the missionaries who apparently landed on the peninsula hundreds of years ago and are now lying out in the open or floating in the water.
  • Sahara Corp’s lab is officially in the mountains to the north of the map. However, the underground entrance to the laboratory is in the southernmost part of the cave system and peninsula. Apparently someone didn’t pay attention to the card design.

Plot holes and logic holes are not only found in games. There are also many scenes in a number of films that simply do not make any sense:

At the end of his video, SovietWomble explains that in many places in the game you can tell that the story has only found its way into the game later. Many elements have already been added to the game in previous updates completely ignored by the main story. The exciting mysteries and unanswered questions remain unexplained. He assumes that the small development team simply lost track at the time and should have come up with a better plan. Because the end of the game left a stale aftertaste for him.
