with BoekStart you learn to read better

Today is International Children’s Book Day and if there’s one thing that’s important about children’s books, it’s that you can read them well. The BoekStart app is there to guide you through the world of children’s books.

International Children’s Book Day

International Children’s Book Day takes place every year on April 2, and we’ve been celebrating it since 1967. Its purpose is to draw attention to children’s books to promote a love of reading. Why is that on April 2? Because Hans Christian Andersen was born on that day (in 1805), the author of the Little Mermaid and many other fairy tales among others.

The BoekStart app can also help to encourage reading in children. It is explained in very clear language what you can do in the field of reading. For example, you can learn more about the library, which books are available for babies and you can create a reading list to keep track of all the books you have read with your child(ren). It is also possible to set a reading time alarm.

Tips for reading aloud

The app also gives tips in text about reading with the youngest, such as the tip that you should take the time with your toddler to look at pictures and that you can ask your child to tell the story in his own words afterwards. For example, a child without being able to read still learns a little ‘reading comprehension’, a skill that is also very important later in primary school.

It may sound crazy: ‘reading’ a baby with a crackle book, but the point is that children learn in a playful way what a book is and what you can do with it. Just lay the foundation for when children get a bit older and learn to read for themselves. Many people forget that the library exists due to the existence of ebooks and online bookstores, while it is a very good way to read many books without having to pay for it (unless you turn them in too late, of course).

In any case, it is good that there is an International Children’s Book Day, because reading is very important, even in a world in which young people mainly look at TikTok and social media.
