Will the Google Pixel 6a be the budget smartphone of 2022?
The Google Pixel 6 (Pro) exceeds expectations, so how does a slightly stripped-down version with some nice features sound? The Google Pixel 6a is coming.
It is normal that traditionally a number of large smartphones are released every year. Google is also part of that, but the Pixel series almost always had something. It was often just a good smartphone with a few special features, but in the whole picture the price was sometimes a bit on the high side.
Google a series
That was partly solved with the ‘a-series’. From the Pixel 3, a Pixel 3a came a little later. This one had slightly fewer features, but the price was a lot more reasonable. Plus, there’s always a market for affordable smartphones, so it makes sense that Google continued this trend towards the Pixel 4 and 5.
Google Pixel 6a
Now the version is also coming to the latest Pixel 6. The Google Pixel 6a is coming. The smartphone has the potential to become a potent budget smartphone. We see a number of features with which the cheaper Pixel 6a measures itself well with its big brother(s). This is thanks to leaks and renders from OnLeaks and 91mobiles.
big brothers
First: the design. Actually only good news but also the trend of the a-series: the Google Pixel 6a is very similar to its big brothers. A screen with small bezels and a hole punch camera on the front and the back also gets the recognizable ‘visor’ bar that houses the cameras. The Pixel 6a gets two cameras, just like the regular 6.
tensor?
In terms of specs, it’s still a guess, but 91mobiles predicts that it probably goes both ways. The Google Pixel 6a could get a midrange variant of the brand new proprietary Tensor SoC that Google released for the new Pixel, but keep the Tensor for the big boys and run a Snapdragon 778G, too. The same goes for the cameras: expect a major upgrade compared to the previous generation and perhaps (parts of) the hardware of the Pixel 6 series. Also like the Pixel 6, the Google Pixel 6a could be available with 8GB of RAM, but 6GB of RAM wouldn’t be a complaint either.
The Google Pixel 6a should be priced a bit more affordable and then it is logical that you have to hand in some features. You should actually be happy that you get the design of the big boys almost one-on-one.
