Why you should never put your child in a car seat with a winter coat, according to experts

A ‘crash test’ by ADAC, the German sister of the ANWB, shows that it is extremely dangerous.

Serious injuries

The situation was tested by putting a child doll in thick winter clothes in a car seat. An emergency stop was then simulated at 16 kilometers per hour. And then that thick winter coat of your child turns out to be very dangerous. “Because the filling in winter clothing leaves space between the belt and the body, it cuts deep into the abdomen in an emergency. This can cause serious injuries to soft tissues such as the intestines, liver or spleen and even lead to internal bleeding,” Markus van Tol of the ANWB told AD.

Experts warn

To prevent dangerous situations, the ANWB and Safe Traffic Netherlands also warn about wearing a winter coat in the car. “We therefore recommend that you take off your jacket or at least pull it over the belt before boarding. Children should also be fastened in this way or, even better, without thick winter clothes,” says Van Tol.
