Who is Huggy Wuggy? Games, films & soft toys for children?

In social media you can see appearances of the creepy plush character “Huggy Wuggy”. Where does the creature come from? Is this something for children?

“Huggy Wuggy” is becoming more and more popular. You can see the figure in many YouTube videos, on TikTok or as a plush figure at various stands at flea markets and fairs. The creature is characterized by its plush exterior, large eyes and mouth with many sharp teeth.

Where is Huggy Wuggy from? Is this a game or movie?

Huggy Wuggy does not originate from a horror film, but from the video game “Poppy Playtime” from 2021 (view on Steam). This is a survival horror game in which you sneak through an abandoned factory in search of missing employees. Along the way, you’ll come across some toys that have come to life. Huggy Wuggy is one of those toys. The aim of the game is to survive and not get caught by Huggy Wuggy and Co.

From what age is Huggy Wuggy suitable?

From the description alone it is clear that the game nothing for children is. So is the plush figure Huggy Wuggy not intended for little ones. There is no age rating on Steam. The first chapter starring Huggy Wuggy is also available as an Android app in the Google Play Store. There is the game Approved for ages 13 and up. Younger people should therefore not see the relevant content. Some Steam key sites list the game with a 12+ rating.

Various youth protection groups are also critical of content in which Huggy Wuggy appears, for example in the parent guide for TV, streaming & YouTube, flymo. This includes not only the game itself, but also videos in which the character plays a leading role, for example on Instagram or YouTube. In the first kindergartens, it is now not permitted to bring corresponding plush figures with you.

On the other hand, some parents don’t mind putting a Huggy Wuggy figure in their little kids’ hands. There is also a split image of the character on social media:

There should also be videos with the character in the “YouTube Kids” area, which is actually suitable for children. Parents should therefore generally keep an eye on their children’s media consumption and take fears seriously.

Huggy Wuggy: The Movie

The second chapter of the game “Poppy Playtime” was released in early May. Further sequels are planned. In addition, a film with Huggy Wuggy & Co. is also planned (source: Deadline.com). The game developers from “Mob Games” are said to have already found a film studio for an implementation in Studio71 (V/H/S 94). Roy Lee, who is also responsible for “Lego Movie”, “Blair Witch”; “The Grudge” and the Stephen King two-parter “It” was responsible.
