WhatsApp usernames are coming (with big benefits)

WhatsApp is getting a new feature that will allow you to add someone with a username. Easy, but usernames in WhatsApp have more advantages.

Read on after the ad.

WhatsApp usernames are coming…

It looks like WhatsApp will get usernames in the future. Currently only see the phone number when you get a message from someone who is not in your contacts. You also need to already know someone’s phone number to be able to message them in WhatsApp. Sending messages will soon be a lot easier with usernames.

… and these are the benefits

Adding usernames in WhatsApp has more benefits. The main one is that someone doesn’t need to know your phone number to send you a WhatsApp message. Great for privacy and also a lot easier to send someone you don’t know an ‘app’.

You can now do that in part by sharing your personal QR code (click on the QR code next to your name in WhatsApp Settings). But that is cumbersome and it is never wise to just scan every QR code that is sent to you.

WhatsApp usernames: Android first, then iOS

The rumor that WhatsApp will get usernames comes from WAbetainfo. This website checks the beta versions of WhatsApp and looks for new functions or settings.

The new feature was discovered in a beta version of WhatsApp for Android. It’s normal for new features to appear in WhatsApp for Android first, before they become available on iPhone.

More cool updates for WhatsApp

The news that WhatsApp will soon be getting usernames is nice, but the chat app has recently had a few cool updates planned. For example, it is now possible to edit messages in WhatsApp.

According to the company, the update is currently being made available worldwide and will be available for everyone to use in the coming weeks. So you may have to wait a while before the update is ready for you.

Edit WhatsApp messages

Another new feature in WhatsApp will soon allow you to secure individual conversations on your iPhone. It is already possible to secure WhatsApp with, for example, Face ID. You must first unlock the app before you can access all conversations.

The new feature therefore adds another layer of security, because then you can also lock individual conversations in WhatsApp. This way you can be sure that a private conversation won’t just be read if someone uses your phone for a while. Face ID or Touch ID is used to secure the call.
