War in Ukraine: Apple Pay and Google Pay are suspended in Russia
It is currently no longer possible to use Apple Pay, Google Pay or other similar payment services in Russia as a result of economic restrictions imposed by European Union countries and the United States in connection with the war in Ukraine.
Blocking Apple Pay and Google Pay in Russia
The Central Bank of the Russian Federation has published a statement in which she announces that customers of five large Russian banks can no longer make transactions with their bank cards. This concerns card payments (including Internet purchases) in other countries and the use of payment services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The Russian banks concerned are VTB Group, Sovcombank, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank and Otkritie. Customers of these banks can still use their bank cards in Russia, but not with Apple Pay and Google Pay which are suspended in the country.
These economic restrictions are in place as a result of Russia’s invasions of Ukraine. The war in Ukraine is in its second day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the Russian military of “bombard civilian neighborhoods”. “It reminds us [l’offensive nazie] from 1941 »he said, referring to at least 137 dead and 316 wounded on the Ukrainian side. “We are all here” to defend Ukraine, he added at the end of the day in a video shot in front of the presidency building in Kiev.
