Vestas record-breaking wind turbine delivers full power for the first time

The V236-15.0MW wind turbine from the Danish manufacturer Vestas has achieved a record output of 15 megawatts for the first time. The system is still only part of a test phase.

Wind power is likely to continue to play an essential role in power supply in the future. Until 2032 the federal government undertakes around two percent of the entire land area for wind turbines. This also seems necessary in order to phase out the supply of coal-fired power in the coming decade.

Overall, the expansion of wind power is progressing. In addition to the increasing areas that governments are reserving for plants, wind turbines are also becoming more and more efficient and powerful. The Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas recently demonstrated this.

New wind turbine from Vestas breaks record

Via Twitter the company announced that the first prototype of the V236-15.0MW wind turbine has now reached its full output for the first time. The system is located on a test site not far from the north coast of Jutland. Several manufacturers test their new models there before they are delivered.

Vestas completed the first prototype in December 2022 and put it into operation. After initial tests and sometimes stormy weather conditions, the wind turbine has now achieved the desired record.

About two years after the announcement, the system could soon be generating energy on a large scale. The diameter is now around 236 meters, the rotor blades are 116 meters long.

Wind power: Competition ensures ever more powerful systems

But anyone who thinks that 15 megawatts is the limit is wrong. The Chinese manufacturer CSSC has already announced a system with an output of up to 18 megawatts. However, there is still no really working model – in contrast to the currently most powerful wind turbine on the planet from Mingyang Smart Energy.

This currently delivers a peak output of 16 megawatts, one megawatt more than the Vestas model. The Danes, on the other hand, now want to focus on series production of the V236-15.0M. In the best-case scenario, this will start in the second half of the year, with the first customers located in the US states of New York and New Jersey.
