Twitter should have been a protocol, not a company, says its co-founder

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, said his biggest regret is that Twitter has become a business. The one who is no longer the boss of the social network since last year thinks that it would have been better if the whole thing had been a protocol.

“The biggest problem and my biggest regret is that [Twitter] became a business”, tweeted Jack Dorsey in response to a question about whether the rig turned out as he envisioned.

Asked about the structure under which he wanted Twitter to operate, Jack Dorsey replied that it should be a protocol and that Twitter should not be owned by a state or another company. If it were a protocol, Twitter would work much like email, which is not controlled by a centralized entity, and people using different email providers can communicate with each other.

To date, Twitter is embroiled in multiple struggles. The company has sued Elon Musk for trying to walk away from its $44 billion takeover bid for Twitter. A former executive turned whistleblower has also accused Twitter of misleading federal regulators about its security measures to protect against hackers and spam accounts.
