Apple employee almost fired for TikTok video

An Apple employee, Paris Campbell, reports on TikTok that Apple is threatening to fire her. The reason? She posted on TikTok a video that has gone viral about an Apple service. Here she explains what to do (and what not to do!) if your iPhone is stolen.

The thieves, who stole the iPhone from a Campbell follower, wanted the owner of the phone to remove the iPhone activation lock from the phone. Campbell reacted to this, with all its consequences. Why Apple wants to fire the TikTokker now and why this is particularly weird. iPhoned explains.

Why iPhone Activation Lock should be on

Paris Campbell has nearly half a million followers on TikTok. She achieved this fame not with TikToks on Apple topics, but as a stand-up comedian and through other typical TikTok content. That she worked at Apple was not even publicly known until this riot.

The thieves of Campbell’s follower’s iPhone threatened to sell the private data on the black market if she didn’t delete the stolen iPhone from her Apple ID account. The purpose of the thieves was to bypass the iPhone activation lock.

Campbell, obviously an expert on the matter, reacted cryptically in her TikTok response to the incident. She does not literally state that she works for Apple, but she does say that she works ‘for a certain company that likes to talk a lot about fruit’. The TikTokker then advises against disabling the iPhone activation lock.

What is iPhone Activation Lock?

The iPhone Activation Lock automatically requires users to unlock their iPhone with their Apple ID password after it has been reset. Without the Apple ID password, you can no longer use the iPhone. Campbell mentions all of this in her TikTok video, just as Apple describes it on its own site.

In addition, she reassures the victim by saying that the thieves cannot access her private information. This video has gone so viral that Campbell was called by her boss at Apple.

Why this TikTok riot is remarkable

According to her boss, she had violated her contract with Apple by publicly disclosing that she is an Apple employee. Surprisingly, this is not stated in Apple’s bylaws. She reports that there is nothing in there that says that this is not allowed. Employees are primarily not allowed to “damage Apple’s image and reputation.” However, this incident surrounding the iPhone activation lock does not seem to affect Apple’s image. On the contrary, it reinforces the image we have of Apple’s excellent security.

The impending layoff is even more striking given that dozens of other Apple engineers do engage in online debates with the Apple community. Campbell explains this bizarre situation in her follow-up TikTok. Her manager told her that Apple doesn’t pay her to “make TikTok videos.”

She concludes her speech, in which she says she is an excellent employee, by saying that “Apple used to respect it when people did things that were really crazy and out of the box goods. This is definitely crazy and out of the box‘. Whether Campbell still works for Apple is unknown to this day.
