SOS emergency alert via satellite saves students

Satellite SOS Emergency Alert lets you call emergency services when your iPhone is out of Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. The function is only available on the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus and can also be used in the Netherlands since the release of iOS 16.4.

In the Netherlands you probably don’t need SOS emergency notification via satellite that quickly, but there are places in the world where the function is certainly not an unnecessary luxury. This is evidenced by the fact that last week three students were rescued from a ravine by SOS emergency notification via satellite.

During their adventurous trip, the three students ended up in a ravine with unexpectedly deep water, which was probably caused by the wet winter in Utah. They got stuck in the water and two of them already showed symptoms of hypothermia.

Due to the ravine’s location, there was no mobile coverage, but luckily the third student had an iPhone 14 with him. Thanks to the SOS emergency notification function via satellite, it was possible to send a message to the emergency services. They were then rescued by a Salt Lake City helicopter team, with Arizona paramedics on board. The Emery County Sheriff’s Office posted a detailed account of the event on Facebook.

As mentioned, you probably won’t need the SOS emergency notification function via satellite in the Netherlands anytime soon, because mobile coverage is pretty good here. Yet there are still places where you suddenly cannot have mobile coverage. In addition, the function is of course also good to use when you are on vacation.

That’s why it’s a good idea to try out the feature in advance. Then you know exactly what to expect if you unexpectedly need to be rescued by SOS emergency notification via satellite.
