This WhatsApp feature gets 5 major improvements

WhatsApp status updates

Just like in apps Instagram and Snapchat, WhatsApp has a Stories function, which is called the ‘Status’ in the app. You can post a photo or video there that is visible to contacts for 24 hours. This feature of WhatsApp seems a bit less popular than on other platforms and now WhatsApp has announced a lot of new features for its Status on its blog.

First of all, you can now choose who sees your status messages. On WhatsApp you can be in contact with friends, colleagues and family members. From now on you can select exactly who will or will not see your new status message.

New kinds of status

Status messages are also getting a lot more varied. You can now place a sound message as a status. Such an audio fragment can last up to 30 seconds, but you can of course place several fragments in succession. Also new are the web links that you can place as a status. Your contacts will see such a link including a handy preview of the web page. For example, part of a news article is already visible.

Furthermore, WhatsApp’s blog post makes it clear that status messages will also elicit more interaction. In the app, a green ring can be seen around the profile image of contacts who have posted a status. If you have viewed that status, you can also respond to it yourself with a status response. You do that by swiping up and choosing an emoji when you view the status.
