SwiftKey disappears from the App Store

SwiftKey is Microsoft’s predictive keyboard, which is especially popular on Android devices. But the app is also installed quite often on the iPhone. This is especially true for users who have switched from Android to iOS.

Unfortunately, there have been no updates for the iOS version for quite some time. It is now more clear why: the app will disappear from the App Store on October 5.

SwiftKey appeared in 2014 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2016. Since 2017, no new functions have actually been added. SwiftKey was popular for its swipe functionality and predicting the words you want to type. The latter works better and better the longer you use the app.

Keep using Swiftkey: only for fast downloaders

If you still want to continue using SwiftKey, you can. You must be fast. You can still install the app until October. The keyboard will continue to work after that time. Reinstalling (via your purchases in the App Store) is then no longer possible, according to Microsoft.

SwiftKey delisted: no official reason

The message that SwiftKey is disappearing from the App Store comes from ZDNet. The website inquired at Microsoft about the long lack of updates. Chris Wolfe, Director of Product Management at SwiftKey then said:

“As of October 5, SwiftKey iOS support will end and it will be removed from the Apple App Store. Microsoft will continue to support SwiftKey Android, as well as the underlying technology of the Windows touch keyboard. For customers who have installed SwiftKey on iOS, it will continue to work until they manually remove it or switch to a new device.”

SwiftKey disappears

An official reason for SwiftKey’s disappearance from the App Store is not given. ZDNet thinks it has to do with Apple no longer granting access to certain interfaces. If that’s the case, it’s quite tricky to create a product that needs integration to work. Perhaps it also plays a role that Apple wants to send more users to QuickPath.
