No time right now?

A year and a half after the first fully electric Volvo, the Swedish manufacturer has announced its second electric SUV with the Volvo C40 Recharge. Production starts in autumn.

In autumn 2019, Volvo presented its first all-electric vehicle with the XC40 Recharge. The E-SUV is based on the modular CMA platform, which the Chinese parent company Geely also uses. The Polestar 2 is also built on the platform. Now Volvo is going one step further when it comes to electromobility. With the Volvo C40 Recharge, the Swedish premium carmaker is bringing a vehicle to the market exclusively as an electric car for the first time.

Volvo C40 Recharge can travel 420 km

According to Volvo, the C40 Recharge will roll off the assembly line at the Belgian plant in Ghent from autumn 2021. The XC40 Recharge has also been produced there for a few months. The two Volvo sister models also have a lot in common. Like the XC40, the C40 Recharge is powered by two electric motors on the front and rear axles – the system output is 300 kilowatts (408 horsepower). Volvo specifies the torque as 660 Newton meters. The maximum speed is 180 kilometers per hour.

At 2.2 tons, the 4.40 meter long vehicle is quite heavy. According to the manufacturer, a 78 kilowatt hour battery provides the necessary energy. It should be able to be charged to 80 percent in 40 minutes in fast charging mode. The range according to the WLTP standard is around 420 kilometers. According to Volvo, the range can be improved in the coming months via software updates.

Volvo wants to install new software via over-the-air updates. Volvo donated an unlimited volume of data for this. As with the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, the second fully electric Volvo model also has the Android-based infotainment system developed together with Google. This means that apps and services from the Play Store such as Google Maps and Google Assistant are available to users.

E-SUV C40 Recharge from October in Germany

The C40 Recharge will go on sale in Germany from October. The manufacturer has not yet commented on the price. According to heise.de the price will likely be slightly higher than that of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. For the Volvo currently demands around 62,000 euros. There should also be a rental model. According to the strategy presented last, the C40 Recharge is to be sold exclusively online. From 2030, the Swedish carmaker also only wants to build and sell pure electric cars.
